EAST WOODHAY FLOWER SHOW – Saturday 19 August 2023
After a week of rain the sun shone on the day and a wonderful crowd packed East Woodhay Village
Hall. The Floral classes were well supported this year with some excellent displays. With a twenty
six percent increase in the number of entrants there was an extensive array of cakes and bakes,
preserves, photographs, handicrafts, children’s classes, spectacular dahlias, and fruit and veg – even
wonky ones!
Entertainment was provided by East Woodhay Silver Band, and youngsters were thrilled by a guest
appearance from ‘Bluey’. There were also sideshows, stalls, a barbecue, and the ever-popular teas.
Chairman of the Show, June Powell, won the Ladies’ Challenge cup. Ninety-six year old Les
Barber, who has been competing at the Show since he was eight, carried off the Hayes Challenge
Cup and the Canon Stephenson cup. Gillian Pocock won the Coronation Cup, the Mrs. R. Thomas
Cup, and the Ellen Webb Challenge Cup for the best vase of flowers. As well as winning the Arthur
Curnick Cup, Norman Powers also won the Tom Trice Memorial Cup for the best carrots in show,
for the fifth time.
Other cup winners were:

The John Partridge Memorial Cup – Les Wallace
The Walt Hills Memorial Cup – Sue Taylor
The Floral Cup – Jane Little
The Frederick Marsh Cup for best photograph – Cathy Neller
The Sampson Cup – Kim Boreham
The Jane Wells Cup for best under 16 flower arrangement – Rebecca Steward

Many thanks to Paul Hurst, Chairman of East Woodhay Parish Council, for opening the Show. The
Committee also thanks Matthew Webber who permitted parking in his field, and our volunteers who
help set up the Show, man stalls, run side shows, and provide teas. Thanks also to our sponsors,
supporters, judges, and competitors – we couldn’t do it without you!
